THE AMBEDKAR ISSUE
· It all started when the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, on 18 Dec, Wednesday, made a statement that quotes, “Chanting Ambedkar has now become a fashion; If they (opposition) had chanted God’s name, they’d be in Heaven by now”, which is a clear case of demeaning Dr. BR Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution’s accomplishments and ideologies.
· Several Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, MK Stalin, Uddhav Thackeray, Arvind Khejriwal etc have expressed their condemnation.
· Various Leftists and Ambedkarites’ organisations have also let out their discontent via press releases and peaceful protests.
· The opposition party demanded an apology and taking back of his words, from the Union Home Minister.
· Owing to Amit Shah’s refusal, the opposition MPs stormed out of the Parliament later on 18th Dec and the session was adjourned.
· The opposition alliance, after visiting from the Ambedkar statue in the Parliament premises, was denied the entrance into the parliament today, 19th Dec, by the BJP MPs, who allegedly carried sticks in offence.
· Commotion ensued as there were claims by the BJP, of Rahul Gandhi pushing two MPs during the protest demanding apology and resignation from Amit Shah.
· Mallikarjun Kharge was pushed in retaliation and there were series of clashes both physically and verbally at the entrance, humiliating the dignity of the Parliament.
· The opposition desks in the Parliament bore a portrait of Ambedkar as well as all the protestors had one with themselves during the protest.
· BJP to file an FIR against Rahul Gandhi for alleging misconduct with Nagaland MP SP Konyak under Prevention of Atrocities Act for SC/ST - 1989, and hurting MP Sarangi.
· While Rahul Gandhi changed to a Blue Shirt, indicating his inclination towards the Ambedkarism ideology and went upon to check on the hurt MP Sarangi.
Both sides have pressed for charges in the Parliament Street Police station and their respective presiding officers against each other regarding the scuffle.
