THE AMBEDKAR ISSUE

THE AMBEDKAR ISSUE

Aftermath of the parliamentary fiasco of demeaning Dr. B. R. Ambedkar by the Home Minister

  • ·     It all started when the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, on 18 Dec, Wednesday, made a statement that quotes, “Chanting Ambedkar has now become a fashion; If they (opposition) had chanted God’s name, they’d be in Heaven by now”, which is a clear case of demeaning Dr. BR Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution’s accomplishments and ideologies.

    ·    Several Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, MK Stalin, Uddhav Thackeray, Arvind Khejriwal etc have expressed their condemnation.

    ·    Various Leftists and Ambedkarites’ organisations have also let out their discontent via press releases and peaceful protests.

    ·      The opposition party demanded an apology and taking back of his words, from the Union Home Minister.

    ·      Owing to Amit Shah’s refusal, the opposition MPs stormed out of the Parliament later on 18th   Dec and the session was adjourned.

    ·      The opposition alliance, after visiting from the Ambedkar statue in the Parliament premises, was denied the entrance into the parliament today, 19th Dec, by the BJP MPs, who allegedly carried sticks in offence.

    ·      Commotion ensued as there were claims by the BJP, of Rahul Gandhi pushing two MPs during the protest demanding apology and resignation from Amit Shah.

    ·      Mallikarjun Kharge was pushed in retaliation and there were series of clashes both physically and verbally at the entrance, humiliating the dignity of the Parliament.

    ·     The opposition desks in the Parliament bore a portrait of Ambedkar as well as all the protestors had one with themselves during the protest.

    ·      BJP to file an FIR against Rahul Gandhi for alleging misconduct with Nagaland MP SP Konyak under Prevention of Atrocities Act for SC/ST - 1989, and hurting MP Sarangi.

    ·       While Rahul Gandhi changed to a Blue Shirt, indicating his inclination towards the Ambedkarism ideology and went upon to check on the hurt MP Sarangi.

  •       Both sides have pressed for charges in the Parliament Street Police station and their respective presiding officers against each other regarding the scuffle.

Union Home Minister’s comments on Ambedkarism was utterly demeaning and is a huge disgrace to its followers. A person holding such a high position in the nation’s government, must not deliver an impetuous statement that directly offends the accomplishments and the social impact created by Dr. Ambedkar and his followers.

Disproportioning Ambedkar’s name to that to God, is highly condescending the latter while degrading the former. He clearly means that the Ambedkarites are for only the Hell, ironically enough where most are rationalists, who considers the idea of Hell- Heaven, Sin and Good Deed as myths to sustain social oppression.

Even after all the protests and questions from the opposition, creating a scuffle in front of the Parliament, rather than taking his words back or making an apology, is thoroughly unacceptable. What would make them stand against a genuine apology for a disrespectful remark that it is comfortable to humiliate the parliament by standing in for a chaotic commotion?
